Thread Calculators
Practical tools for anyone specifying, buying or running industrial sewing thread. Work out consumption, cones to order, needle sizes and count conversions.
Thread technical tools
Count systems and conversions, for any thread with a count on it.
Bag closing & packaging
Consumption and ordering for woven PP, HDPE and FIBC sack lines.
- Bags Per Cone Calculator for Bag Closing Thread How many bags one cone will close, and the cones a run of 10,000, 1 lakh or 5 lakh bags needs.
- Monthly Bag Closing Thread Requirement Calculator Bags per day into cones per month, with how long a single cone lasts on your line.
- Spun Polyester to Polypropylene Thread Converter The equivalent bag closing thread in the other range, either direction, matched on strength or thickness.
- Bag Closing Needle Size Calculator The needle range published for a given bag closing thread, or every bag closing thread that runs on the needle already in your machine.
Which threads these cover
Count conversion works for any thread with a count on it, and every ticket we make is already in it: Textured Polyester Sewing Thread, Polyester Lubricated Sewing Thread, Polyamide 6 (Nylon 6) Bonded Thread, Poly Poly Corespun Sewing Thread, Spun Polyester Sewing Thread, Spun Polyester Bag Closing Thread and Polypropylene Bag Closing Thread. The maths does not care what the thread is being sewn into.
Consumption is a different matter. A bag closer running a 9 mm stitch through woven polypropylene uses nothing like the thread a garment machine does at 18 stitches per inch, or a lockstitch head going through 4 mm of leather. Each one needs its own basis, so we keep them as separate tools rather than one calculator with a fudge factor in it.
Bag closing came first because those figures are the hardest to find anywhere, and because running short of thread stops a packing line. Other industries are being added.
Where the numbers come from
Each calculator says whether a figure is standard textile maths or our own production data. If something depends on your setup rather than ours, such as the real metres on your cone, the tool asks you for it instead of assuming a value.
Being built next
If one of these is a calculation you do by hand every week, tell us and we will move it up the list.
- Apparel & garment Thread per garment by type, and operation-level consumption by stitch class.
- Leather & footwear Consumption on thick multi-layer seams, and bonded thread size selection.
- Home & textile Upholstery, curtain and mattress quilting requirements.
- Automotive Seat cover and interior trim thread planning.
- Tents & outdoor Tarpaulin and tent seam length to thread requirement.
- Costing Thread cost per unit and per order, with side-by-side supplier comparison.
