What this calculator does

Bag closing thread consumption is driven by one thing: how far the sewing head travels across the mouth of the bag. From that it works out the metres each closure takes, how many bags a single cone will close, and how many cones a run of 10,000, 1 lakh or 5 lakh bags needs.

Every figure comes back as a range because the chain-off tail your machine leaves at each end of a seam varies. The consumption figures behind it are Mahalaxmi Thread production data from our own and our customers' lines, not garment tables — those assume around 18 stitches per inch on thin fabric, nothing like a bag closer running an 8–10 mm stitch through woven PP. Plan against the lower bag count and the higher cone count.

How to use it

Measure across the open mouth of the bag and enter that, in inches, mm or cm — the quick-picks are the sizes woven sacks are traded in, 18 x 30 through 26 x 44 in. Pick the chain your closer runs, set the metres on your cone, and the results update as you go. If your cones are labelled by weight rather than length, ask us for the metres on your exact ticket rather than converting.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the answer shown as a range instead of one number?

Because every machine leaves a different chain-off tail at the start and end of a seam. The bag itself is a fixed width, but the tail is not, and across thousands of bags it adds up. The range covers a tight tail at one end and a generous one at the other, so your real figure will sit inside it. Plan stock against the lower bag count.

Does the calculation already include wastage?

Yes. Normal sewing wastage is built into the consumption figure, so you should not add a further wastage percentage on top. If you want stock cover for demand swings or delivery lead time, add that as safety stock in the monthly requirement calculator instead.

My cones are labelled in kilograms, not metres. What do I enter?

Ask us for the length of your exact ticket. Length per kilogram changes with count, ply and finish, so converting from weight introduces error we would rather not build into a public tool. Give us the ticket number and cone weight and we will confirm the metres.

What is the difference between single, double and quad chain for thread use?

Single chain is a one-thread chain stitch and uses the least thread. Double chain, the standard closure for woven PP and HDPE sacks, uses roughly twice as much. Quad chain doubles it again and is used where seam security matters most, such as FIBC panels and heavy feed or mineral bags.

Does bag width matter more than bag weight rating?

Yes. Thread consumption is driven by the distance the sewing head travels across the mouth of the bag, not by what the bag holds. A 50 kg sack and a 25 kg sack of the same mouth width consume the same thread per closure.
